Cohen-sponsored measure eyes rules for taxing digital sales

WASHINGTON — Tennessee and Mississippi are among 13 states that have enacted sales taxes on digital goods and services, but a bill co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., would ensuer that such digital sales are not double-taxed or taxed at a higher rate than their tangible counterparts.


At a hearing on the legislation Monday before the Judiciary subcommittee on commercial and administrative law, Cohen, the lead Democrat co-sponsoring the bill, said he is sensitive to state revenue needs and that “we should intervene when it is just, and do it sparingly.”
